SSGS MUSIC NEWS- Week of June the 5th to June the 12th, 2011

Sloan has been added as a headliner to Guelph, ON's Hillside Festival, this year’s festival runs from July 22 to 24.

With the release this week of “David Comes To Life”  Fucked Up’s punk rock “Opera” the band decided to celebrate it with a Pop-Up Record Store release party, the first hand info I got from the guys (and girl) in the band is that the midnight opening was crazy until all the free beer was gone than it fizzled out leaving band members and die-hard fans.

Jack White and wife Karen Elson announced this week that they are throwing a 6th Anniversary/Impending Divorce party…it takes all kinds I guess

I knew there was a reason I love small indie labels…free music. Paper Bag Records released a FREE Summer sampler this week which includes everyone from Austra to PS I Love You, they also throw in some Elliot Brood for good measure…enjoy

Broken Social Scene released a video this week for their single “Sweetest Kill”; it was banned by MuchMusic and embraced by everyone else. I watched and wondered what the big deal was, some woman chopping up some guy’s rubber arm...I’ve seen worse on Freaky Eaters

Next week is the annual NXNE Festival and conference in Toronto, everyone should get out and see at least one band, my personal viewing choice for the week is at Yonge-Dundas Square on Thursday, it’s Free and bands include The Descendents, Fucked Up, METZ, OFF! and Rusty…can’t wait to see OFF!..........(I’m still holding my breath for a Press Pass)

SSGS Music News for the Week of May 30th to June 5th, 2011

So the week began with the news that Tupac is alive and well in New Zealand….I’m just gonna leave that one alone.

We then got the word that The Clash are to begin recording  their eighth studio album, oh I’m sorry I mean Rancid (I know another Rancid sounds like The Clash joke, but it works so well sometimes).

According to the NME, when U2 play the Glastonbury Festival later this month tax protesters will float a 'huge bundle of fake cash' during their set, in other U2 news they are now offering advertising space on a 'huge bundle of fake cash' that will be visible during their Glastonbury set.

Organizers announced this week that Coachella 2012 will be held over 2 weekends instead of just one…meaning…I still can’t go.

With the release of their latest full length record David Comes To Life  Fucked Up are opening up their own “Pop-Up” record store at Toronto's Clint Roenischart gallery at midnight on June the 7th, the day David Comes To Life is officially released, come on down and pick up the record plus a few 7 inches and anything else they can dig out from under Mike’s couch.

According to Pete Townsend’s blog post on The Who.com they (Pete and Roger) will be releasing a Quadrophenia box set sometime in the future.

A one day stunt has reportedly cost online retailer Amazon approximately 3 million dollars. Amazon offered Lady Gaga’s second album 'Born This Way' for only 99 cents, they've moved over 440,000 downloads, this adds up to a little over $3 million dollars. Some say that this was to bring customers in to start using amazon’s new Cloud Drive service, which allows users to store music files on remote servers and stream them over the Internet to their computer or smartphone, but according to the New York Times this may have had the opposite effect, the times was quoted as saying “Amazon may have underestimated the zeal (or thrift) of Lady Gaga’s fans. By early afternoon the company’s servers stalled, and many users were unable to download or listen to the album in full. Frustrated customers quickly took to Twitter and to Amazon’s user review page for “Born This Way.” “Very disappointed,” a customer wrote in a one-star review of the album. “I guess next time I will pay full price and get the album immediately on iTunes.”

Coldplay released a new single this week titled Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall…I don’t hate them, but I don’t like them….oh god I’m a Coldplay Fan

The D'Urbervilles are now what MATTERS...So Sit Up and Listen

So Toronto band The D'Urbervilles have decided that a new name and also “a new sound and a new look” was due, according to a press release from the band, the band has decided to now call themselves Matters

Personally I’m a fan of the band, their sound and their energetically infused live shows were what won me over. Matters plan to release their debut seven-inch on the 5th of April. The seven-inch has two songs: "Get In or Get Out" and "Wild Steps." Both tracks can be heard over at MySpace and you check out the video for "Get In or Get Out" at the end of this piece.
Matters have a full-length record planned for the fall. They also plan to hit the road in April with PS I Love You.

With singer John O'Regan winning new legions of fans all over the planet as Diamond Rings (I’m not exaggerating, he’s Big Time) it didn't surprise me that the guys stood back and took at good look at where the band was and where it could be, and with the change in name and direction musically, my prediction is that Matters will be huge in no time at all.

P.S.....I was going to write “Matters will Matter” but even I have some bit of dignity, not allot, just some
