Mariposa Folk Festival 2012-Day One

As everyone entered Tudhope Park in Orillia for this year's Mariposa Folk Festival late Friday afternoon is was clear that the trend of diversity among the artists as well as the attendees that I have come to expect and love was to continue again this year…..thank you Mariposa.

It was hot out there but thanks to EventWater Solutions everyone was kept hydrated with their stainless steel water station....keep that water flowing.

The Mariposa Mainstage kicked off Friday night with the funky pop sounds of Vancouver's Hey Ocean and ended with audience favorite Montreal trio Plants and Animals.

But I have to say that the act that stole the day for me if not the whole weekend was Shane Koyczan and the Short Story Long, I really don't know how to put into words what Shane Koyczan did up on that stage Friday night but he moved everyone one of us in that audience. With his mix of humour and heart wrenching honesty the slam poet got across his art in a way those only true poets can aspire to…..thank you.

There are so many things to experience during a weekend like this you can't do everything...but you can do a lot, so get out there.

Remember, tickets are still available at the gates for the rest of the weekend

Tonight's Mainstage headliner is Jann Arden.

Here are a few photos from Day One…..now on to Day Two.

Keep updated all weekend by following Self Serve Gas Stations Tweet's and Facebook Feeds.

Music Workshops – The Heart & Soul of the Mariposa Folk Festival

Below is a press release from Mariposa's Publicist Gerry Hawes describing this years Music Workhops , but I just wanted to say that from what I have read so far this is in my opinion the strongest in recent years for workshops.

A rich and unique dimension of the Mariposa Folk Festival is its music workshops set to inspired themes. Talented artists from varied backgrounds and diverse musical styles work together, and off of one another, to create music that is original, impromptu, and in the moment. It’s the heart and soul of Mariposa.

This year, Mariposa is presenting twenty-eight creatively-themed offerings. They explore the musical genres, transcend social boundaries, and throw away the norms. Among the workshop titles are Coast to Coast, Rocking Roots, Celtic Connections, Got Them Old Acoustic Blues, New Folk, Chansons Français, Canadian History in Song, Mixing Words and Music, Literary Folk, Ukes on Sunday Afternoon, Mon Dieu!, The Bob Dylan Songbook, From a Woman’s Point of View, and Poems, Prayers & Promises.

People flock to Mariposa for the great concerts, but it’s their memories of the daytime music workshops that bring them back year-after-year.

Mariposa Folk Festival takes place July 6-8, 2012, at beautiful Tudhope Park in Orillia, Ontario.

Tickets are available at www.mariposafolk.com. Kids 12 and under admitted free, and deep discounts for youth and young adults. New this year, on site audience camping.
