Kathleen Edwards joins the 2013 Mariposa Folk Festival lineup

With today's announcement of Kathleen Edwards being added to this year's Mariposa Folk Festival ;the Festival lineup is really starting to take shape. With just 4 studio albums to her credit Edwards continues to blaze a path through the musical landscape, and with last years 'Voyageur' climbing all the way to #2 on the charts in Canada you just know she's got more for us in the future.

Kathleen will be headlining Mariposa's Friday night stage alongside Bahamas and more performers to be announced soon.

Mariposa Folk Festival July 5, 6, 7, 2013

It's been a very cold last few weeks, and as I woke this morning and noticed it was -16 °C
(That's 3°F for my American friends) thoughts of summer started flowing, more precisely thoughts of this year's edition of the Mariposa Folk Festival.

The last few years I've been writing about the festival, its performers, its history and most importantly its impact on the people that attend it. As the festival travels into its 53rd year (14th back in its home of Orillia) we already have a few performers announced with countless more to be revealed in the coming months. So far the list includes American folk singer Arlo Guthrie, Canadian singer, and songwriter Murray McLauchlan , singer, songwriter Lennie Gallant and The MacKenzie Blues Band (singer Tara MacKenzie just tears it up, so don't miss them).

The heart of the Mariposa Folk Festival has always been its Volunteers, and so like every other year it's time to start thinking of helping out, you can go HERE and choose the appropriate option – Returning Volunteer or New Volunteer, I volunteered a few years ago and it's lots of fun.

Tickets for this year's festival are now available; just click on this link Tickets for Mariposa 2013 to get all ready for a great weekend of music, dance, art and fun.

Sonic More Music will be posting Mariposa Folk Festival updates as they are made available, we will also be at the festival this year to give everyone the inside scoop on North America's premiere Folk Festival, so bookmark the BLOG or LIKE us on Facebook.

Now here is Billy Bragg from last year's Mariposa Folk Festival performing 'Waiting for the Great Leap Forwards'…enjoy

2012 Mariposa Folk Festival Mixtape Vol 2

One of the most enticing things about The Mariposa Folk Festival is the extensive diversity of music that they offer each year, and this year's festival is no different.

Here on my Mariposa Folk Festival Mixtape Vol 2 are a few more of the artists that will be joining us this year on the shores of beautiful Lake Couchiching…..enjoy

 Old Man Luedecke

Old Man Luedecke will take to the 2012 Mariposa Folk Festival stage bringing with him a 2011 Roots & Traditional Album of the Year Juno and admirers that just can't wait to sit back and devour banjo chord's and stories aplenty.  Here is the track "The Rear Guard", from his 2010 album 'My Hands Are On Fire and Other Love Songs', the album is available on iTunes.

Hey Ocean!

Coming our way by Vancouver Hey Ocean's description of themselves on their Facebook page is as follows:

Hey Ocean is a band from Vancouver, Canada. We like to make people feel good

I think with that description they hit the proverbial nail on the head as you can tell by listening to the track "Big Blue Wave" from their 2011 'Big Blue Wave EP', and from what I have experienced so far Hey Ocean! is Pop Music with just the right amount of soul to win you over.

'Big Blue Wave EP' is available on iTunes.

Meaghan Blanchard

Mariposa welcomes to this year's Festival a performer who has in my opinion the vocal sounds of that classic country we don't hear too much of these days. With a rich tone that has to be heard live Meaghan Blanchard who hails from PEI is far from unknown, her latest album 'Chasin' Lonely Again' won a 2011 ECMA award for "Country Recording Of The Year", so make sure to make some time at this year's festival to enjoy a bit of Meaghan Blanchard .

Check out the single "Chasin'Lonely Again"right here and you get her album on iTunes.

The Spinney Brothers

It wouldn't be the Mariposa Folk Festival without some good ole' traditional bluegrass, and this year The Spinney Brothers are the act to catch if classic acoustic bluegrass is your thing. After 19 years and 10 albums under their belt The Spinney Brothers keep spreading the word of Bluegrass. Here is a track from their latest album 'Memories'; the track is called "What a Wonderful Life".

The Spinney Brothers latest album "Memories" can be purchased through Mountain Fever Records.

**Click on the song titles highlighted in RED to hear them**

Remember that this years Mariposa Folk Festival takes place on July 6, 7, and 8th at the beautiful Tudhope Park in Orillia.

2012 Mariposa Folk Festival Showcase Auditions

Each year the Mariposa Folk Festival holds Showcase Auditions, these auditions gives chances to three lucky acts to garner coveted spots on this year's bill.  This year's showcase auditions are being held on Sunday May 6th, from 1 – 5 p.m. at Aladdin’sBanquet Hall, in Orillia. The general public is welcome (it's a pay-what-you-can basis).

Now from what I remember from last year's auditions you should get there a bit early because it tends to fill up fast and you will defiantly want to find a seat to get comfortable.

There will be nine acts performing at this year's auditions , and after all of them have performed a panel of 5 judges will decide which three will get chosen to perform at this year's festival.

The nine hopeful acts are:

Andy McGuire
Erin Bolton
The Express & Co.
Grady Kelneck
Anne Walker
Sarah Beatty
The Slocan Ramblers
Sarah Calvert
The Unseen Strangers
