Pam Carter Becomes President of Mariposa Folk Foundation

Mariposa Folk Foundation turned a new page on Sunday, with the election of a new board president, Pam Carter, who will lead the board in its 2013-14 year. Carter also continues to serve as Chair of the Mariposa Folk Festival Organizing Committee.

A key priority for Carter over the coming year is to reinforce the national reputation of Mariposa Folk Foundation through its storied summer festival and archives housed at the Clara Thomas Archives and Special Collections at York University. Carter also intends to continue building on the special relationship Mariposa Folk Festival enjoys with its host community of Orillia.

“Mariposa is a major national event with audience members and stakeholders from across Ontario, Canada and the United States. We’re lucky that such an important festival is staged in our community” stated Carter, a life-long resident of Orillia.

Mariposa Folk Festival has been produced at Orillia’s Tudhope Park since 2000, after several moves to alternative sites and communities in Ontario during its first four decades. This includes stints in Toronto, Barrie, Coburg and Bracebridge.

Mariposa Folk Foundation also welcomed a new board member, and welcomed back a former board member, at its annual general meeting held on Sunday, February 24th, 2013. The 2013-14 board is:

Pam Carter, President (Orillia)
Greg McCaughey, First Vice President (Kitchener)
Michael Slan, Vice President (Toronto)
Ian Brown, Treasurer (Orillia)
Ken Rovinelli, Secretary (Oakville)
Mike Hill, Artistic (Orillia)
Herman van den Berg (Barrie)
Aaron Howes (Guelph)
Larry LeBlanc (Toronto)
Monique Jaiko-Marchildon (Barrie)
Ross McIntyre (Orillia)

Bahamas added to the 2013 Mariposa Folk Festival Lineup

His name is Afie Jurvanen, he used to be the guitarist/pianist for Feist, at one point he lived in Barrie, Ontario (A Local Boy!) , he has released two widely acclaimed records (2009's Pink Strat & last year's Barchords)…..and you may know his as Bahamas

Afie (pronounced AY-fee) gives us a real feel for the music, whether it's a straight back folk-out or he's swinging it awake as he does in "Caught Me Thinkin" the listener is never left feeling lost.  The news that he will be playing the Grande Dame of Folk Festivals The Mariposa Folk Festival this July added some real coolness to an already great early lineup, so if you were on the fence about attending this year the addition of Bahamas should seal the deal for you.

You can get tickets for this years festival HERE.
