2012….The Year End List to end all Year End Lists

Everyone does their year-end music lists but instead of boring you to tears with dissecting every record to death I thought I'd just mention a few records that came out in 2012 that moved me enough to give a second or third spin (sometimes even a fourth)…so here we go

Aaron Mangoff – "You and I"
Cold specks – "I Predict a Graceful Expulsion"
BidiniBand – "In The Rock Hall"
Diamond Rings – "Free Dimensional"
D-Sisive – "Jonestown 3: The Dream is Over"
Grimes – "Visions"
Indian Handcrafts – "Civil Disobedience For Losers"
Modern Superstitions – "Modern Superstitions"
PS I Love You – "Death Dreams"
Scott Cooper – "quiet company"
Yacht Club – "Nonnavera Mixtape"

Looking over my list I just noticed that they are all Canadian....what does that tell ya ?

Thanks to everyone that followed the Blog (even after the name change) this past year…I hope to take Sonic More Music farther in the coming year so look out you have been warned.

Fucked Up and Sloan play Toronto Benefit shows

Toronto's The Great Hall plays host to a couple of benefit shows on the 20th and 21st of this month. On the 20th Toronto's own Fucked Up will play all 78 minutes of their critically acclaimed punk rock opera David Comes To Life as a benefit concert for the COUNTERfit's drug user's memorial project and The Barriere Lake Legal Defense Fund. The Sadies, PS I Love You and Quest for Fire are also on the bill that night…Do not miss this killer show.

Then the following night Fucked Up present (They are NOT playing that night) a second benefit concert featuring Sloan, The Rural Alberta Advantage, Ohbijou and Bonjay. Sloan have announced they are going to be playing the full One Chord to Another record, now that is one show you will not want to miss (I saw Sloan this summer and they are as good if not even better than when they started 20 years ago).

Tickets are $20 for both evenings and are now on sale at Fucked Up's webstore. Both shows take place at The Great Hall (1087 Queen Street West) and are all ages events with doors opening at 7 p.m. Tickets are also available at Rotate This (801 Queen St. W.) and Soundscapes (572 College St.) in Toronto.

At the shows you will be able to pick up a split 7" of Fucked Up and Sloan. Fucked Up cover "Jingle Bells" and Sloan cover the Christmas classic "12 Days of Christmas"…Sloan's version is already available here

There will also be an After Party...here is the flyer with all of the info:

Below are descriptions of the two charities that will benefit from these two shows:

COUNTERfit's drug user's memorial project was established to acknowledge the high number of drug user deaths due to the drug war. The project will create a permanent outdoor monument to remember and celebrate the lives of drug users who have died in our community. It also aims to strengthen our resolve to end the drug war and the devastating impacts on our friends and family members.

The Barriere Lake Legal Defense Fund was set up to support The Algonquins of Barriere Lake, a small First Nations community in Quebec. They have been forced into a costly legal battle with Canada to protect their land rights. The community has been fighting for years to ensure Canada and Quebec honour their Trilateral Agreement, a landmark resource co-management agreement signed in 1991. The governments are determined to quash the agreement and are now trying to seize sensitive community documents supporting the fight for the Trilateral Agreement. These documents include research on traditional land use & occupancy, wildlife habitat studies, and land claims research.

PS I LOVE YOU + DIAMOND RINGS-"LEFTOVERS"

Every once in awhile I come across a track that sticks in my head and won't leave, this track by PS I LOVE YOU featuring Diamond Rings called "Leftovers" is one of those tracks. I really can't go into too much detail why it's won me over because I really don't know, maybe it's because I really dig both of the artists and for them to come together and put something out that's this good is just a real treat for all of us.

"Leftovers" is from a 7" released by Paper Bag Records...it can be found HERE.

Without further ado here is the video...and if you get a chance to check out either PS I LOVE YOU or Diamond Rings LIVE do it! you will not leave disappointed.

Not Your Mother’s Madonna

I may be a bit late to jump on this but back in April Canadian indie label Paper Bag Records, home to such artists as The Rural Alberta Advantage, PS I Love You and Born Ruffians decided to celebrate the launch of their new website by releasing for free a covers compilation with 9 of their rosters finest covering Madonna’s True Blue record. At first I thought True Blue was a rather odd choice but after giving it a thorough listen to more than once I changed my tone and decided they went the right way. So if you’re looking for something just a little different but still has a tinge of familiarity this comp is it…and it doesn’t hurt that it’s free.

Here it is:
Paper Bag Records-True Blue

The Track listing is:

1.     Woodhands – Papa Don’t Preach
2.     Young Galaxy – Open Your Heart
3.     The Acorn – White Heat (Silken Laumann Remix)
4.     The Rural Alberta Advantage (We’re Scared Version) – Live To Tell
5.     PS I Love You – Where’s The Party
6.     Winter Gloves – True Blue (Featuring Hannah Georgas)
7.     Laura Barrett – La Isla Bonita
8.     Born Ruffians – Jimmy Jimmy
9.     You Say Party – Love Makes The World Go Round

Toronto’s 2011 NXNE Festival...Whip It OFF! until your Fucked Up

Yesterday Toronto’s NXNE Festivals and Conference gave us a good chunk of the music artists they have lined up for their 2011 Festival. As I did a quick scan of the list there were a few names that jumped out and smacked me right away...

Devo: Come on, you have to be a real hard ass not to like at least one Devo track, these guys have been around forever and still making and performing great music.... de-volution is inevitable

OFF!: Keith Morris and company are going to bring their anti-establishment/hardcore vibe to the 2011 festival, and I for one will be there to feel everything

PS I Love You: Kingston Ontario’s assault on our senses will continue when PS I Love You invade the festival. These 2 guys have the ability to produce music that not only makes u move but destroys a few brain cells at the same time...can’t wait

Men Without Hats: The Safety Dance…That’s all I have to say

Digable Planets : there was this whole scene back in the early ‘90’s that had Hip-hop and Jazz being fused together, and Digable Planets lead the way with their 1993 record “Reachin' (A New Refutation of Time and Space)” I remember really digging the single "Rebirth of Slick (Cool Like Dat)", I’d like to catch them just to see what time has done to their sound.

Evan DandoJuliana Hatfield: Another that’s all I have to say act, if Evan and Juliana can just do an acoustic version of “It's a Shame About Ray” then I’ll be a happy man

No Joy: Another Montreal buzz band that’s been lurking in the back of my mind for a bit, their fuzzy, shoegazing sound is hypnotic enough to strike a chord even within the hardest hipsters hearts.

Rusty: Much Music+1990’s=Rusty.....With their album “Fluke” and the Bruce LaBruce video for "Misogyny”, these guys just gave a real kick in the Ass to music at the time, a very welcome reunion
