U2 - The Joshua Tree - Released 26 Years Ago

The Joshua Tree was released in my 17th year, it was the album that propelled U2 from that band that only you and your friends new about to a group that the whole world was listening to. I remember people waiting outside till midnight for the stores to start selling The Joshua Tree , things like that just don't happen these days......26 Years Ago it all changed.

I've selected the song "Red Hill Mining Town" to play off of the album, sure I could play the staples but I've always went back to this track...it moves me the way a song should.

My Concert Ticket Stubs
Tom Waits - Hummingbird Centre - 1999

So you have probably the worst seats in the house, but then after the show you feel as if you had been front row center...that's how I felt after seeing Tom Waits....on my all-time best concert top 10 list.

Nine Inch Nails - The Downward Spiral – 19 Years Old

I say this quite often these days but NIN's The Downward Spiral being 19 years old really makes me feel old. I remember this CD being on all the time, and knowing every "bit" of it, it was and still in a modern musical masterpiece.
I saw them live in concert twice that year…the show took the album to a whole other place…I can still remember as NIN took the stage at Molson Park we looked up and these birds were flying over and the sun was going down…it gives me shivers to type that.

Ron Sexsmith Live at London's Royal Albert Hall

Tonight at London's Royal Albert Hall one of Canada's preeminent Singer/Songwriters takes the stage for his first headlining show there, that person is no other than Mr. Ron Sexsmith. So to celebrate tonight's gig I thought I would play a song he performed a few years ago on the British TV show 'Later... with Jools Holland' playing alongside Jools Holland, the song is called "Just My Heart Talking".

New Country Rehab - Luxury Motel [Video]

New Country Rehab's Ghost of Your Charms was released this Tuesday on Kelp Records. The Winnipeg Free Press hailed the album as "something extraordinary and singular".
Sonic More Music had this to say :A mixture of old school magic with "The Image of Me" to the electrified Alt explosions of "The Bank and the Army", Ghost Of Your Charms does not sit back on its laurels as it builds with each track until you are begging for more.
This week, the band debuted the first video from the album for "Luxury Motel". Beautifully captured in a performance environment by Keaton TF Evans, the song lyrics offer a poignant reminder that our blissful vacations in developing countries often come at a cost.

A Band Called Catl - Documentary

A Band called 'Catl' a short, gritty and intimate exclusive pass into the quirky introverted minds behind a Toronto west-end Rhythm and Blues party-band, as seen through the eyes of Director, Jonathan Lawley. Lawley's view gives us a retro feel with a throwback to old 16mm look which embodies the band's artistry as we peel off layers of the band's process through intimate interviews, kitchen jam sessions, and live performances.

Since the release of this short film Catl have taken an indefinite hiatus, I hope they return real soon.

STOMPIN' TOM CONNORS DIES AT THE AGE OF 77

This is something I don't want to post but here we go…Canadian Country/Folk Music Legend Stompin’ Tom Connors has died at the age of 77. The news of his passing came from his website where it says "Connors died of natural causes at his home in Ontario, surrounded by family."….if there was a musician that wore Canada on his sleeve it was Stompin' Tom.

Stompin' Tom wanted this message passed along upon his death:

"Hello friends, I want all my fans, past, present, or future, to know that without you, there would have not been any Stompin' Tom." "It was a long hard bumpy road, but this great country kept me inspired with it's beauty, character, and spirit, driving me to keep marching on and devoted to sing about its people and places that make Canada the greatest country in the world." "I must now pass the torch, to all of you, to help keep the Maple Leaf flying high, and be the Patriot Canada needs now and in the future." "I humbly thank you all, one last time, for allowing me in your homes, I hope I continue to bring a little bit of cheer into your lives from the work I have done."
Sincerely, Your Friend always, Stompin' Tom Connors.

Tom is survived by his wife Lena, 2 sons, 2 daughters and several grandchildren. The Celebration of Tom's life is being planned for Wednesday, March 13th in Peterborough, ON at 7pm at the Peterborough Memorial Centre and per his request, will be open to the public. In lieu of flowers, the Connors family has asked that donations be made to your local food bank or homeless shelters, in memory of Stompin' Tom.

Here is the film "Across This Land with Stompin' Tom Connors"…Filmed Live at the Horseshoe Tavern on Queen St. in Toronto.

Digging for Vinyl – It looks like an LP but it's really a 45
...The 12" Single Years

I told this story to someone else recently so it's still fairly fresh in my mind; it was 1983 and I was still pretty wet behind the ears as far as music was concerned, what was out there, what to buy…that kind of stuff.  A friend and I had decided to buy a new record, back then you would pool your money with someone else to buy some tunes, and if you were the one that had the turntable or tape deck it was yours…so we buy a copy of Duran Duran's "Is There Something I Should Know" and in brackets it said (Monster Mix)….did not clue in to what that was about or that it only had 2 songs on it, one on each side, so be it, we took it home to spin. We were already familiar with the sounds of DD so when the needle dropped on the vinyl for the first time and it was this very slow, noisy, almost scary sounding song, not what we had expected, but since it did say (Monster Mix) we took it to be a "Scary" version of the song…..yes we were playing that 12" single not on the speed it was meant to be played (45 RPM) but on 33…we played it like that for about a week until one day one of us put it on after playing a 45 (7" to the kids out there) and it sounded like it should sound…..that was my introduction into the world of the 12" single.

What got me thinking about 12" singles again was the nice variety of them that Alleycats Music & Art here in Orillia had in stock when I visited last week. They had everything from Blue Peter's "Don't Walk Past" to Laurie Anderson's "O Superman", even some Howard Jones and some Heaven 17….all of which back in tha day would have been spinning on my turntable, who am I kidding if they were at my place I'd spin them today.

The attraction for me to the 12" or EP was there was always something new or different on it, the record that the original song had come off of had probably already been out for a bit and if you were a fan of the band you were chomping at the bit for more from them, so when you got a new EP there was always the "Extended Dance mix" or the "Monster Mix" , or you might have tracks that were only exclusive to the 12" single…and sometimes those were the ones that I'd play the crap out of.

My find for this week was the Depeche Mode 12" for "Enjoy The Silence (The Quad: Final Mix)", that came out in 1990 and what makes this one so special is its Single Sided, the one side has the song and the other side has a huge DM with a rose etched into the vinyl…look at the pictures I have provided. Not only does it look very cool (always a selling point) but the 15 minute remix of "Enjoy The Silence" is killer…..I played it about 4 times in a row this morning and could not get sick of it, always a sign of a good find.

So get yourself down to Alleycats this week here in Orillia and dig yourself up some killer tunes for yourself.

See you next Wednesday in the Vinyl Bins
