2012 Mariposa Folk Festival Mixtape Vol 2

One of the most enticing things about The Mariposa Folk Festival is the extensive diversity of music that they offer each year, and this year's festival is no different.

Here on my Mariposa Folk Festival Mixtape Vol 2 are a few more of the artists that will be joining us this year on the shores of beautiful Lake Couchiching…..enjoy

 Old Man Luedecke

Old Man Luedecke will take to the 2012 Mariposa Folk Festival stage bringing with him a 2011 Roots & Traditional Album of the Year Juno and admirers that just can't wait to sit back and devour banjo chord's and stories aplenty.  Here is the track "The Rear Guard", from his 2010 album 'My Hands Are On Fire and Other Love Songs', the album is available on iTunes.

Hey Ocean!

Coming our way by Vancouver Hey Ocean's description of themselves on their Facebook page is as follows:

Hey Ocean is a band from Vancouver, Canada. We like to make people feel good

I think with that description they hit the proverbial nail on the head as you can tell by listening to the track "Big Blue Wave" from their 2011 'Big Blue Wave EP', and from what I have experienced so far Hey Ocean! is Pop Music with just the right amount of soul to win you over.

'Big Blue Wave EP' is available on iTunes.

Meaghan Blanchard

Mariposa welcomes to this year's Festival a performer who has in my opinion the vocal sounds of that classic country we don't hear too much of these days. With a rich tone that has to be heard live Meaghan Blanchard who hails from PEI is far from unknown, her latest album 'Chasin' Lonely Again' won a 2011 ECMA award for "Country Recording Of The Year", so make sure to make some time at this year's festival to enjoy a bit of Meaghan Blanchard .

Check out the single "Chasin'Lonely Again"right here and you get her album on iTunes.

The Spinney Brothers

It wouldn't be the Mariposa Folk Festival without some good ole' traditional bluegrass, and this year The Spinney Brothers are the act to catch if classic acoustic bluegrass is your thing. After 19 years and 10 albums under their belt The Spinney Brothers keep spreading the word of Bluegrass. Here is a track from their latest album 'Memories'; the track is called "What a Wonderful Life".

The Spinney Brothers latest album "Memories" can be purchased through Mountain Fever Records.

**Click on the song titles highlighted in RED to hear them**

Remember that this years Mariposa Folk Festival takes place on July 6, 7, and 8th at the beautiful Tudhope Park in Orillia.

What I'm Listening to right now: Prefab Sprout 'Two Wheels Good'

What I'm listening to right now is the second release from English pop/rock outfit Prefab Sprout called 'Two Wheels Good' , originally titled in the U.K. 'Steve McQueen' , but due to legal shite from Steve McQueen's estate they changed the name when it was released in the U.S.
The album was produced by Thomas Dolby except for the track "When Love Breaks down", it was produced by Phil Thornalley, probably best known as the ex-bass player with The Cure.
This is one of those records that I can listen to from start to finish without not having to skip any tracks.

The 2012 Mariposa Folk Festival Mixtape is Here!

The 2012 Mariposa Folk Festival Mixtape is a collection of different artists that will be calling Mariposa their home this July

Mariposa brings to this year's festival one of this generations great protest singers Billy Bragg, don't miss out as Bragg brings wit and humor to every song he sings.

"Waiting for the Great Leap Forwards" is from Bragg's 1988 album 'Worker's Playtime'.

Track #2  Good Old War:  Coney Island

Good Old War…an Indie, Roots rock trio from Philadelphia, PA is made up of Tim Arnold, Keith Goodwin,Dan Schwartz. Coney Island is from their debut release 'Only Way To Be Alone'.

Orillia native Aaron Mangoff has been on a crusade to make sure all of us in this area are exposed to some half decent music…and it's paying off, you can catch him at this year's Mariposa Folk Festival.  The haunting track "The Best Part" is from his 2011 release 'Rest Easy' that is available on iTunes

Track #4 Oh Susanna: Lucky Ones (live from the Dakota Sessions)

I personally have been a fan of Oh Susanna for quite a few years now and have never tired from spreading the word of how really good they are, not just O.K. but really good. Here is Lucky Ones, it's taken from their last studio record 'Soon The Birds'. This is a live version taken from the CMT TV show The Dakota Sessions, it also features Blue Rodeo's Jim Cuddy.

Enjoy.......

Remember that this years Mariposa Folk Festival takes place on July 6, 7, and 8th at the beautiful Tudhope Park in Orillia.

2012 Mariposa Folk Festival Showcase Auditions

Each year the Mariposa Folk Festival holds Showcase Auditions, these auditions gives chances to three lucky acts to garner coveted spots on this year's bill.  This year's showcase auditions are being held on Sunday May 6th, from 1 – 5 p.m. at Aladdin’sBanquet Hall, in Orillia. The general public is welcome (it's a pay-what-you-can basis).

Now from what I remember from last year's auditions you should get there a bit early because it tends to fill up fast and you will defiantly want to find a seat to get comfortable.

There will be nine acts performing at this year's auditions , and after all of them have performed a panel of 5 judges will decide which three will get chosen to perform at this year's festival.

The nine hopeful acts are:

Andy McGuire
Erin Bolton
The Express & Co.
Grady Kelneck
Anne Walker
Sarah Beatty
The Slocan Ramblers
Sarah Calvert

Is This the Worst Cover song of All-time?

I've have had the displeasure of being witness to quite a lot of very bad cover versions over the years, I thought Madonna's "American Pie" fiasco took the top spot, but today I came across a cover version so bad that you won't sleep for days.

The song is "Rise" and was originally recorded by PiL and it was on their brilliant "Generic" Album, but today my ears were obliterated by the 90's band Tripping Daisy doing their version of "Rise" for the soundtrack of the otherwise quite good film/soundtrack " Basquiat"……why did someone think this was a good idea, I'll let you decide for yourself, first is the original, then is the cover version. I warn you, you will suffer night terrors after this.

The Tragically Hip Canada Day 2012 Burl's Creek Family Event Park

This show was announced a while ago but I thought I'd jump on the band wagon and give it a little ink since it's in my area and all. The Tragically Hip along with Death Cab For Cutie, The New Pornographer’s & The Rural Alberta Advantage are playing July the 1st at Burl'sCreek Family Event Park which if you don't know is a large outdoor venue about an hour and a half (when traffic is good) north of Toronto, this is the same site that was to play host to the 2009 V-Fest till the festival organizers in their infinite wisdom decided to move it to the Molson Amphitheatre…such a terrible decision, but that was then and this is now.
From what I have gathered the gates are to open at 3: PM so I would start the drive north a good few hours early in order to get there in time to see the first band hit the stage, but from my personal experience with large outdoor shows and gate times…they never open as planned, so make sure your air conditioning is working.  This is actually a pretty good line-up, but I doubt the Hip's beer swilling fans that only know two of their songs (Blow at High Dough" and "New Orleans Is Sinking") will have any clue who the other bands are*…which is a good thing for the rest of the crowd as maybe they will stay in the beer tents and out of the sight lines.
The show is being brought to us by the fine folks at Impact Live.ca
Now this is where I would post maybe a Live Hip video…you know to get you in "Tha Mood" for the big show…but I'm gonna post a video from The Rural Alberta Advantage, really dig these guys.

Enjoy…and see ya there
