Spin Magazine Suspends Publishing, Lays Off 11 Staffers

I think we all seen this coming, but for a large print publication to take these steps is the writing on the wall for where everything is headed.

SPIN was recently bought out by Buzzmedia

A statement from Buzzmedia reads as follows:

“Buzzmedia and Spin are committed to moving forward with print, but we are still determining exactly how print fits in with Spin’s multiple distribution points and growth initiatives.”

It's kind of sad because SPIN magazine was the magazine I read when I was growing up to get all of my music news and knowledge from. I read Rolling Stone but for a 15 year old kid from Canada Rolling Stone always seems a little too "American" for me, but SPIN was about the music, but as Bob Dylan wrote 'The Times They Are a-Changin'.

Below is a link courtesy of the International Business Times with all of the info regarding the story.

Derek Christoff aka D-Sisive drops Graceland

Derek Christoff also known as D-Sisive , one of Canada's most prolific hip-hop poet's has dropped a new track on us called Graceland...below Derek describes what it's all about:

This song has been through a few name changes since I recorded last Tuesday. It was originally titled Bubba Ho Tep, after the Bruce Campbell film [for obvious reasons]. Then I renamed it Don Mckellar, after the brilliant Candian director/actor, for patriotic reasons. After sitting on that title, I decided to not give this one a NAME name. It's the Asian Elvis jumpoff so I wanted it to be simple.
My home inspired the majority of the lyrics. Positively and negatively. So it made sense to go with the home of the mixtape's inspiration.

Graceland.

Let the games begin!

Hope you enjoy.
<3 Derek

Mariposa Folk Festival 2012...A Few Shots

As I sit here under the shade of the large maple trees at Tudhope Park listening to the Old School Bluegrass of The Spinney Brothers I thought I'd post a few pictures from the last few days of the 2012 Mariposa Folk Festival. I will be writing a more detailed article in the next few days but until them I hope these tide you over.

Mariposa Folk Festival 2012-Day One

As everyone entered Tudhope Park in Orillia for this year's Mariposa Folk Festival late Friday afternoon is was clear that the trend of diversity among the artists as well as the attendees that I have come to expect and love was to continue again this year…..thank you Mariposa.

It was hot out there but thanks to EventWater Solutions everyone was kept hydrated with their stainless steel water station....keep that water flowing.

The Mariposa Mainstage kicked off Friday night with the funky pop sounds of Vancouver's Hey Ocean and ended with audience favorite Montreal trio Plants and Animals.

But I have to say that the act that stole the day for me if not the whole weekend was Shane Koyczan and the Short Story Long, I really don't know how to put into words what Shane Koyczan did up on that stage Friday night but he moved everyone one of us in that audience. With his mix of humour and heart wrenching honesty the slam poet got across his art in a way those only true poets can aspire to…..thank you.

There are so many things to experience during a weekend like this you can't do everything...but you can do a lot, so get out there.

Remember, tickets are still available at the gates for the rest of the weekend

Tonight's Mainstage headliner is Jann Arden.

Here are a few photos from Day One…..now on to Day Two.

Keep updated all weekend by following Self Serve Gas Stations Tweet's and Facebook Feeds.

2012 Mariposa Folk Festival App

Don't forget to download and use the Mariposa Folk Festival App for your Apple and Android devices. The app can be downloaded by clicking on Mariposa Folk Festival App.

It's a very cool way to keep track of all the Stage Schedules for the entire weekend.

(Note: this app does not work in Firefox or Internet Explorer.  It has been developed for Mobile Safari and the Android Browser)

So on my iPhone 4 I opened my Safari browser and typed in this address: http://www.mariposafolk.com/app , then the main page of the App appeared, I then selected to have it stored on my home screen and that’s it.

Thanks again goes out to Trevor Mills at Top Quark for developing this great App.
